ARA urges consumers to shop with purpose in NSW

ARA urges consumers to shop with purpose in NSW By Imogen Bailey | 12 July 2021 The Australian Retailers Association is encouraging consumers in Greater Sydney to limit their shopping movements and shop with purpose as lockdowns continue.  The advice comes as the choice to close stores remains up to retailers themselves, despite NSW recording 112 locally acquired COVID cases to 8pm last night.  Instead, the NSW government introduced a no browsing in retail rule on Friday, urging those going out for essential shopping to ensure the trip is quick and decisive.  Australian Retailers Association CEO Paul Zahra added that consumers should also explore online options including click and collect and home delivery.

Upcoming referendum may see SA retailers able to extend trading hours

Source: Unsplash/Korie Cull. A historic referendum has been called in South Australia which could transform the way retail trading hours are calculated. The reform package, which is set to be introduced by the South Australian state government this week, will seek to give South Australians a say on whether large retailers can extend their trading hours to cater to changing consumer needs. The referendum, which is likely to be held on March 19 next year, could bring SA in line with other state’s trading hour regimes, such as NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory. Shopping Centre Council of Australia executive director Angus Nardi welcomed the potential referendum, stating it gives consumers a voice in the way retailers respond to their needs.

COVID rent crisis pushes small business owners to suicide

Premium Content   Small business owners are being squeezed out of rentals, pressured to sell their homes, and even pushed to suicide as the true toll of a post-pandemic economy reveals itself. Desperate businesses have inundated Small Business Commissioner Maree Adshead s office with 4500 calls, including more 760 related to leasing disputes, new figures show. About 70 per cent of those involved battles with landlords over the amount of COVID rent relief to be paid under commercial leasing protections introduced last year. Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland s Amanda Rohan said businesses were now dealing with the enormous strain of having to repay previously frozen rents while also recovering from the most recent lockdown without the safety net of government support or rent relief.
