By STARS AND STRIPES Published: April 22, 2021 An Air Force Special Operations AC-130J Ghostrider gunship is set to end this month’s Balikatan drills in the Philippines with a bang. In a first, the gunship will participate in close air support training at Crow Valley Military Reservation, a live-fire range north of Clark Air Base on the island of Luzon, Maj. Ken Kunze, a spokesman for the Okinawa-based 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, said in an email Thursday. The training will take place during a five-day window starting Saturday, he said. It will involve a gunship from the 73rd Special Operations Squadron out of Hurlburt Field, Fla., airmen from the 353rd Special Operations Group from Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, and Philippine joint terminal attack controllers from 710th Special Operations Wing, Kunze said.

Yokosuka Naval Base, 35 miles south of Tokyo, said four people there have tested positive since Tuesday, according to a Friday news release. One of the new patients, a new arrival to Japan, was still in quarantine, and the others, one of them a base employee, fell ill with COVID-19 symptoms, according to the base. Kadena Air Base on Okinawa has two new COVID-19 infections, according to base Facebook post Friday. Both fell ill and isolated themselves before their tests.

. TOKYO – Another seven people within the U.S. military in Japan had contracted the coronavirus by 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to reports from military installations. Meanwhile, the virus continued to infect thousands in Japan’s two largest cities. The governor of Osaka prefecture, Hirofumi Yoshimura, asked the national government Tuesday for further emergency measures to curb the virus’ spread, according to public broadcaster NHK. Osaka and neighboring Hyogo prefecture were already in a “quasi-emergency,” but Yoshimura wants to close restaurants, amusement parks, department stores and other sites that attract large numbers of people or are shown to facilitate the spread.
