My parents ran a deli that catered to everyone

When I was a kid growing up in Sydney, my Greek-Cypriot parents owned a small business on a bustling suburban shopping strip. It was one of those old-style delis that lure you in with the heady aroma of charcuterie and cheese.    Our shop was called Jack’s Delicatessen, but my dad isn’t Jack. He’s Mick, my mum is Chloe, my brother is Sam and my sister is Stephanie.   Somehow, I ended up with Menios, a name fit for a Greek goat herder.  Mum had worked at delis and milk bars since arriving in Australia in the 1970s, so when she bought the business, she knew exactly what it took to make it successful. This wouldn’t be a Cypriot deli or even a Greek one - it would cater to everyone.

This Greek Easter marks my father-in-law s second coming

This Greek Easter my family will be celebrating not just one person who rose from the dead after the third day, but also my father-in-law who almost died in a barbecue accident. Last year, when COVID-19 shut down Greek Easter, my father in-law Alex was determined to keep doing the thing he loved the most - getting on the charcoals and preparing his famous souvlaki. While he prepared the barbecue, he did something that many Greek men do - throwing petrol on hot charcoals to quicken the lighting process. His impatience meant he inadvertently created a mini fire ball that blew back on him and caused a quickly moving flame that begun to spread all over his upper body.
