These past few years, more and more desktops and mobile variants have adopted the Zen 3 architecture, so it is just natural that the high-end desktop or HEDT segment would follow the ongoing trend.
The current generation of AMD Zen 2 Threadripper processors codenamed Castle Peak are available in 24, 32 and 64-core variants. But the upcoming Zen 3 Genesis Peak series may start from 16 cores instead of the usual 24 cores.

Yuri Bubliy, the developer of Clock Tuner for Ryzen and also known as 1usmus, tweeted a riddle HEX code on his Twitter account which reads 47454e4553495320313620434f524553 . This code basically translates into ASCII as Genesis 16 Cores and Genesis Peak is the official codename for the Zen 3 Threadripper series.
Core count sweet spot? on January 3, 2021, 15:20 40 comments
Something to look forward to: AMD s Ryzen Threadripper 5000 series, Genesis Peak is expected to be announced in the coming weeks and a recent leak suggests that the 16-core version of the HEDT chip might make a comeback. This is anomalous since their Ryzen 5950X already boasts 16-cores, so assuming the information is legitimate, we ll have to see if AMD s assessment about demand for this core-count plays out.
As with previous Ryzen generations, AMD will be following up its successful Ryzen 5000 series launch with Genesis Peak, its line of high-end desktop (HEDT) Threadripper CPUs leveraging the new Zen 3 architecture.

AMD may possibly bring back 16-core SKUs to the HEDT Threadripper lineup with the upcoming Threadripper 5000 series as indicated by a cryptic tweet from developer 1usmus. The 16-core Threadripper SKU, which may be called the TR 5955X, is likely to be similar to the mainstream Ryzen 9 5950X but with support for quad-channel RAM and additional PCIe lanes.

With mainstream desktops and upcoming mobile variants having moved on to the Zen 3 architecture, it is but natural that the high-end desktop (HEDT) segment would soon follow suit. The current generation of AMD Zen 2 Threadripper processors codenamed Castle Peak come in 24, 32, and 64-core variants. However, the upcoming Zen 3 Genesis Peak family may start from 16 cores.
