The Naval Service provides the maritime component of the Irish State s defence capabilities and is the State s principal seagoing agency. It protects Ireland s interests at and from the sea, including lines of communication, fisheries and offshore resources within the Irish exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The Naval Service operates jointly with the Army and Air Corps as part of the Irish defence forces. The Naval Service was established in 1946, replacing the Marine and Coastwatching Service set up in 1939.
