Speaking at the just concluded Seafood Seminar organised by the Council in Lagos, Norwegian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Knut Lein, said that Norway has made the offer to Nigeria but the country has not come forward to open discussion with the host government. Ambassador Lein also said that it was only Nigeria that can tell what area they need to build capacity adding that whenever Nigeria comes forward to say what they need, Norway will keep its doors opened.

Norwegian salmon exports grew strongly last month, but low prices meant the country’s fish farmers were receiving less revenue than normal, the latest figures show. They totalled 95,600 tonnes during February, a volume rise of 20%, but the value fell by 5% to NOK 5.4bn (£456m) compared to a year ago. Poland, France and the United States were the main markets for export, but there was big growth in sales to China and Italy, the two countries hardest hit and among the first to shut down during the early days of the pandemic. Norwegian Seafood Council analyst Paul T. Aandahl said: “Here, the fear of infection led to a fall in the demand for salmon even before the coronavirus was detected in the country.

Territory seafood is high quality produce and at present a large majority of our seafood is sent to southern states for processing. This report is a key step towards a potential processing facility in Darwin, to grow local businesses and jobs, maximise the value of our seafood and improve access to other markets. The report recommends that the potential facility should focus on Black Jewfish, Barramundi (wild-caught), Pearl Meat, Trepang and various other species that could be smoked or turned into high-end niche products.
