Left Undeveloped For Eight Decades, Napatree Point Rolls With the Tides

Multiple Authors Article In late October 2012, about a day after Superstorm Sandy’s initial surge battered much of Rhode Island’s coast, especially its open-ocean southern shoreline, Janice Sassi navigated her way through a parking lot filled with “mountains of mud” to find a “moonscape.” “The dunes were completely flat,” recalled Sassi, manager of the 86-acre Napatree Point Conservation Area. “I thought it was done. It looked like one big beach.” Sandy had ripped chunks of beachgrass from sections, and one area was forced back some 30 feet. At that moment and for days after, Sassi was concerned about Napatree Point’s future.

Artists use trash collected from river dredging project to educate

PROVIDENCE  When a downtown stretch of rivers was dredged two winters ago, Dan Goulet had an idea for what to do with the inordinate amount of trash pulled from the sandy bottom:  Pack all the twisted bikes, rusting electric scooters, dirty clothes and loads and loads of plastic bags into a giant plexiglass box and put it on display somewhere as a lesson about waste and what consumer behavior can do to our waterways.  It may have sounded like idle musing when Goulet, the marine infrastructure coordinator for the state Coastal Resources Management Council, talked about his de facto art project while the taxpayer-funded work on the Woonasquatucket and Providence rivers was in full swing, but he meant what he said.
