Digital map of California Coastal Trail unveiled

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A digital map showing existing sections of the California Coastal Trail has been released by the Coastal Commission and Coastal Conservancy in a move to spur completion of the route.
“There are currently 875 miles (1408.1 kilometers) of trail and now we can finally see exactly where they are, so we can eventually bridge those gaps and finish the trail,” Coastal Commission Executive Director Jack Ainsworth said in a statement Wednesday.
Planning of the California Coastal Trail has been underway since 1975 and it’s hoped that eventually it will allow people to traverse the length of the state’s 1,230-mile-long (1979.4-kilometer) coast.
McGuire to Host Two Community Meetings Focusing on Wildfires

Del Norte County’s representative in the state senate will hold two public meetings focusing on wildfire prevention and preparedness.
These meetings come as California invests more than $1 billion this year on hiring hundreds more firefighters, purchasing additional equipment, including engines, helicopters, planes and bull dozers and creating more fire breaks, according to a news release from State Sen. Mike McGuire’s office.
The first meeting, held at noon Monday, will include the California Coastal Conservancy and will focus on its role in wildfire prevention, according to the news release.
Crescent City Councilors Explore Habitat Restoration of Elk Creek Watershed as Economic Development, Tourism Strategy

Wanting to give visitors a reason to stay awhile in Crescent City, Councilors and staff are looking at habitat restoration in the Elk Creek Watershed.
City staff partnered with the Smith River Alliance to conduct an urban stream feasibility study on the 8.26 square mile watershed starting in 2019. Now, staff is looking to the City Council to “shape the ultimate goals and development” for the project, City Manager Eric Wier said Monday.
Palos Verdes Conservancy receives grant to weed out invaders

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy recently received a $55,000 Biodiversity Conservation Grant from the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF). The money will go toward the conservancy’s multiyear restoration project to restore 13 acres at Abalone Cove Reserve. This project’s goal is to provide habitat for rare wildlife, increase the numbers of rare plant species and decrease erosion and sediment movement along the bluffs. And it will engage the community in the stewardship of this precious coastal area.
The Abalone Cove Restoration Project began two years ago. The Coastal Conservancy and Natural Resources Conservation Service has provided over $360,000 in funding. California Water Service and Southern California Edison have provided additional gifts. The Conservancy still seeks to raise the final $100,000 from the community to complete funding for the
