2 MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. Fleet Readiness Center East hosted Sec. Walter Gaskin of the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs May 20 for a brief visit focused on FRCE operations and veteran participation in the depot’s workforce.
FRCE Commanding Officer Col. Thomas A. Atkinson greeted Gaskin and led the secretary and official party, including leadership from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, on a quick tour that included stops to meet with many former service members who work at the depot. Gaskin visited FRCE as part of a larger engagement with Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and the station’s tenant organizations, including FRCE and Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point.

The apprentices earned certificates in industrial systems technology, recognizing their completion of the academic portion of the National Apprenticeship Program. The four-year program – governed nationally by Commander, Fleet Readiness Centers – offers participants the opportunity to work as full-time federal employees, receiving pay and benefits as they pursue a combination of education and on-the-job training.
The apprentices are now fully and completely part of the FRCE family, FRCE Executive Director Mark Meno said in remarks given during the ceremony.
Congress seeks to help military bases at risk from flooding, severe weather

NORFOLK, Va. Sixteen Navy bases, including Naval Station Norfolk, have been declared by the Department of Defense for being at risk for recurrent flooding.
Congress has appropriated $927 million in the Fiscal Year 2021 budget for a variety of construction projects at the nation s 95 Navy and Marine Corps bases, and many of those projects specifically related to resilience. Obviously, being near the water for most of our bases, we take flooding very seriously, said Vice Admiral Ricky Williamson, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Fleet Readiness and Logistics.
