Naval Medical Center San Diego Gets Service’s First COVID-19 Vaccines

The Navy’s first doses of the recently approved COVID-19 vaccine arrived at a military hospital in San Diego, a service spokesman said today.
A spokesman for the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery told USNI News that the first vaccines went to Naval Medical Center San Diego and would be followed shortly by Naval Hospital Pensacola, Fla.; Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Va.; and Naval Hospital Jacksonville, Fla.; receiving their first doses today.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The first batches of Pfizer s long-awaited COVID-19 vaccine arrived in San Diego County Monday for both U.S. Department of Defense personnel and civilians, with initial vaccinations to begin as soon as Tuesday.
Naval Medical Center San Diego received an unspecified number of vaccines Monday, with front-line medical workers and essential mission personnel such as EMS, firefighters and gate personnel to begin receiving the first dose of the vaccinations Tuesday. Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton will take a portion of those doses for personnel north of San Diego.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. Naval Medical Center San Diego began inoculations Tuesday. The Department of Defense has prioritized medical staff, essential workers, deploying forces and high-risk service members to receive the vaccine.
Approximately 44,000 doses of Pfizer’s vaccine were allocated to the military. It did not disclose how many were sent to San Diego or Camp Pendleton, which is distributing the vaccine to Marines.
Staff placed the vials into ultra-cold freezers that can store up to 100,000 doses.
