VICTOR ‘RAY’ LEONARD: 1923 - 2021
Ray Leonard was the last remaining survivor of the corvette HMAS Armidale, which was attacked and sunk with the loss of 100 lives in the Timor Sea by Japanese aircraft on December 1, 1942 during the Second World War.
In an extraordinary feat of survival, and despite initial attacks from bombers and later sharks, he was one of 49 men from a crew of 149 who managed to survive at sea for eight days before being rescued.
