Nonetheless, the governor’s news was deeply unsettling.
Harvest Cafe’s manager Shannon Molokie was among those disheartened to hear the announcement. Under normal circumstances the New Dorp Beach restaurant is staffed by special needs Staten Islanders who train to work among customers in a professional setting for future employment.
Molokie said, “The shutdowns are affecting us severely. We’ve been training on Zoom. The trainees are devastated. They even cry sometimes on the Zoom meetings. It’s so sad. We miss them so much it’s like a shell here without them.”
