JTF-Q is responsible for the repositioning of U.S. forces within East Africa through Operation OCTAVE QUARTZ (OOQ), whose mission is to relocate U.S. DOD forces in Somalia to other East Africa operating locations while maintaining pressure on violent extremists and supporting partner forces. INDIAN OCEAN (Dec. 22, 2020) A U.S. Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey from the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, consisting of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD8), the amphibious transport dock ships USS Somerset (LPD 25) and USS San Diego (LPD 22), the embarked 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the expeditionary sea base USS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB 4) conducts maritime operations off the coast of Somalia in support of Operation Octave Quartz (OOQ).
