Government of Canada and Ahousaht First Nation partnering on new response vessel to strengthen marine safety in British Columbia

Share this article Share this article VICTORIA, BC, May 19, 2021 /CNW/ - As part of the Canadian Coast Guard s Indigenous Community Boat Volunteer Pilot Program, Ahousaht First Nation has received and launched its new dedicated response vessel. As a founding member of the Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary (CN-CGA), Ahousaht First Nation works and trains with the Canadian Coast Guard and other first responders to support marine safety on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Under the Oceans Protection Plan, the Canadian Coast Guard s Indigenous Community Boat Volunteer Pilot Program provides communities with funding to purchase boats and equipment to enhance marine safety and emergency response missions in their traditional territories. Ahousaht First Nation s new response vessel is a 29-foot vessel capable of cruising at 32 knots, which is critical in emergency situations. It has an estimated range of 400 nautical miles.

And if you’re not prepared, you could be in trouble. “This is somewhat of a dangerous times on the Great Lakes,” said Dave Benjamin, Executive Director for Great Lakes Surf and Rescue Project. “There’s always hazards around any body of water, but this is the time of year where we are all itching to get out.” The Great Lakes Surf and Rescue Project says if you are headed back to the beach, there are few thing to keep in mind.
