A rare direct live fire encounter took place Monday in the Strait of Hormuz between Iranian fast-attack boats and US naval warships. The Iranian vessels came dangerously close to multiple US ships during the incident in the vital waterway off Iran s coast.

some 30 warning shots were fired by a US Coast Guard vessel that had been escorting the naval group, which included up to six US Navy vessels and the guided-missile submarine USS Georgia. A large group of Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, also known as the IRGCN, fast boats conducted unsafe and unprofessional maneuvers and failed to exercise due regard for the safety of US forces, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby described in a statement.

On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said US-Russia relations are even worse now than during the Cold War.
Lavrov said that Moscow was prepared to normalize ties with Washington but warned that if the US would not participate in a respectful dialogue, “we would live in conditions of a ‘Cold War’ or worse.”
“During the Cold War, the tensions were flying high and risky crisis situations often emerged, but there was also a mutual respect,” he said. “It seems to me there is a deficit of it now.”
The Biden administration’s Russia policy has been extremely hostile. Earlier in April, the US imposed a wide array of sanctions against dozens of Russian officials and entities and expelled 10 Russian diplomats. Before that, the US hit other Russian officials with sanctions over the jailing of opposition figure Alexei Navalny.

Russia Tracking First U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Visit to the Black Sea in 12 Years

A Coast Guard Cutter is now in the Black Sea, a first for the service since 2008, U.S. 6th fleet said in a Tuesday statement.

The Navy’s Automated Celestial Navigation System would replace manual shipboard measurements with something more accurate, while Special Operations Command experts are developing a handheld device for commandos. Both pieces of tech are aiming for GPS-level precision.
“The best accuracy for celestial navigation with certainty is within a couple of meters,” says Benjamin Lane of the Advanced Position, Navigation & Timing Instrumentation unit at Draper Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “In practice, we are within a factor of a few of that.”
