The aerial picture published as the historic photo in the Feb. 9 edition of the Cape Gazette (capegazette.com/node/215273) generated considerable interest. Because of the extent of the information, we decided to publish it again with comments from two readers. Bob Kotowski, long involved with Lewes Historical Society, provided the first response. The second response came from Earl Webb who originally provided the photo. Here are their responses:
“Concerning the aerial photo of piers sent by Earl Webb and published on page 7 in the Feb. 9 Cape Gazette, I think I can help,” wrote Kotowski.
“The large plant and pier in the foreground appears to be Otis Smith’s Fish Products Co. The other menhaden piers also likely were owned by Smith. The red-orange Dolle’s sign is ablaze in Kevin Lynam’s sunrise photograph. It’s an homage to the iconic fixture, which is slated to be moved from its perch on the Rehoboth Boardwalk to a site to be determined.
“It s not every day that you get a chance to shoot a stunning sunrise from the top of the Dolle s rooftop,” said Lynam.
Dolle’s owner Tom Ibach announced in December 2020 that the candy store would close its Boardwalk location after nearly a century and will move roughly 100 feet to the west and be a part of Ibach’s Candy by the Sea.

The Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute rescued a gray seal pup near the Cape Henlopen State Park’s Great Dune Feb. 12.
According to a Feb. 15 press release from MERR, the female pup is about three weeks old and very small. The pup was huddled up against the dune when she was spotted by a beach walker who reported her to MERR, said the press release. Since she was rescued on Valentine s Day weekend, she was nicknamed Cupid.
Cupid had some small wounds near her head, possibly from a bite from another seal. A pup this young is still dependent on its mother for food, so the decision was made to rescue her since she could not survive on her own, said the release.
