Unmarked VPD cruiser narrowly avoids cyclists in bike lane (VIDEO)

A woman who was bike riding with her nine-year-old daughter in the bike lane on Beach Avenue had an unexpected encounter with what turned out to be an unmarked VPD cruiser this week. On Twitter, a woman who identifies herself as Lucy stated that the incident happened shortly after 9 am on Wednesday. “As we approached Bidwell St., I saw a car with its headlights on travelling westbound,” she wrote. At first, I couldn’t see whether the car was in the bike lane or on the road because Beach Ave curves at Bidwell Street. The car, however, was “travelling very fast,” and Lucy quickly realized it was approaching her and her daughter head-on in the bike lane. In response, Lucy told her daughter to pull over, and “I positioned myself in front of her and gestured for the driver to stop.”

Mom and daughter alarmed to see VPD police cruiser barrelling down bike lane

VANCOUVER A Vancouver mother and her young daughter were shocked to see a police car driving towards them in a bike lane this week. It happened Wednesday morning along Beach Avenue, where the City of Vancouver has put a temporary bike lane on the road to give pedestrians more space along the seawall in response to the pandemic. In the first few seconds of spotting the vehicle, Lucy Maloney said she felt panic. “It was just a look like an extremely reckless black sports car, that s what it looked like from where I was,” Maloney said. She said it wasn’t until she used her hands to gesture the vehicle to stop that the police officer activated the flashing blue and red lights.
