The Underrated Holiday Film You Need To Watch
It s that time of year! Everyone is releasing best of lists for the year. Actors, movies, shows, musical artists everything is being ranked as the year draws to a close. And evergreen best of lists pop up too. Best and worst Christmas songs, best and worst Christmas movies, best and worst gifts. I m a sucker for all the lists. But I have a bone to pick specifically with the myriad of lists compiled about the best Christmas movies.
Rotten Tomatoes listed the 63 best Christmas movies of all time. Naturally titles like
It s a Wonderful Life (which lands at number 1),

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced stricter regulations to
curb the spread of the coronavirus. He discouraged large family gatherings, travelling, and he closed some beaches and changed the curfew from 11 pm until 4 am.
This means Christmas and New Year celebrations won’t be the
same. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t have fun.
Let’s look at ways in which you can celebrate Christmas and
New Year s Eve amid the coronavirus.

When it comes to holiday-themed entertainment, it appears Hollywood ascribes to quantity over quality. In the ’90s, the public seemed content to watch classics like
Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer and
White Christmas on repeat, whenever the moment called for a double shot of nostalgia.
But in the streaming era, the expectation seems to be Christmas movies should be as “binge-able” as all 10 seasons of
Friends. Netflix, Hallmark and Lifetime debuted 84 original Christmas movies this year alone between October 27th and December 25th.
That kind of output is only possible with an assembly-line process. One screenwriter I interviewed confided he was given a total of three weeks to write two made-for-TV Christmas movies. To put that into perspective, Pixar usually spends two years or more on a script before moving forward.
