From Lee Krasnerâs âBirthâ painting to the âFamous Last Words: Death of a Poetâ painting by Robert Colescott, the latest exhibit set to open to the public July 20 at Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem covers all stages of life.
âThe Voyage of Life: Art, Allegory and Community Responseâ starts with two river paintings because the exhibit uses the river as a metaphor for the natural ebbing and flowing of life. The introductory section features two paintings â âMounts Adam and Eveâ and âNiagara.â
âMounts Adam and Eveâ is an oil painting on canvas by Jasper Francis Cropsey. It was a gift to Reynolda House Museum of American Art by Barbara B. Millhouse. This painting represents a site near Cropseyâs home in upstate New York.

Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance will return to Winston-Salem on July 8 for a one-night-only performance.
The âunconventionalâ professional ballet company last performed here in 2019 after a seven-year hiatus. But the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the dancers from doing any performances last year. Previously, the company performed here from 2008 to 2012.
Terpsicorpsâ artistic director and founder Heather Maloy said the company performs contemporary ballet.
âItâs more a combination of modern dance and ballet,â Maloy, a University of North Carolina School of the Arts alumnus, said.
She added that this will be the first time that Terpsicorps has performed outside in Winston-Salem.
She believes that audiences want to be inspired but may not be ready to sit inside to do it.
