38th Universal Periodic Review of human rights UK statement on Namibia
The United Kingdom commends Namibia’s continued constitutional commitment to uphold human rights and tackle sexual and gender-based violence, but notes the high prevalence of violence against women.
We congratulate Namibia on its efforts in tackling human trafficking and encourage efforts to continue to increase public awareness of the issue.
We recommend that Namibia:
Enhance public education programmes on human trafficking and ensure sufficient resources to fully train law enforcement and judicial staff in support of the Combatting of Persons in Trafficking Act 2018.
Take steps to prevent and respond to all forms of gender-based violence, including through funding women-led and women’s rights organisations on the frontline and ensuring perpetrators are held to account.

A 46-year-old Sydney man who used stolen identities to launder $43,350 in proceeds of crime through cryptocurrency accounts has been sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment by the Sydney Central Local Court on Wednesday (31 March 2021).
The man used the details of identity theft victims to set up multiple online transaction accounts with a cryptocurrency provider. The digital currency exchange enables people to convert Australian dollars to bitcoin, and vice versa, through Automatic Teller Machines in New South Wales.
Police suspect bitcoin stolen from Western Australia in December 2019 was deposited into the online accounts the man had set up, before he made multiple cash withdrawals from cryptocurrency ATMs.
