The arrest of three Thai men accused of trafficking local women for prostitution-related services to the Sultanate of Brunei has highlighted the risks that underprivileged women in the country face as they try to earn a living during a severe economic downturn triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.
Two of the three locals are brothers, aged 49 and 55, who live in northern Thailand and are accused of having sent several women to Brunei, a tiny but wealthy Muslim nation with fewer than half a million inhabitants on the island of Borneo.
