Covid-19 and the dire financial state of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) have left workers vulnerable to unfair dismissals and con artists who try to exploit them.
Because of health safety measures and budget cuts, the CCMA has closed walk-in facilities at its offices and workers say there are also fewer part-time commissioners available to handle their disputes. Some also complain that commissioners do not act in workers’ interests.
PetroSA pressured to provide information on potential job losses
By Paul Burkhardt
(Bloomberg) – A South African labour union asked mediators to force the state oil company PetroSA to provide more information on proposals that may result in 40% of its employees losing their jobs.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa made submissions to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration “on the absolute refusal by PetroSA management to divulge crucial information,” it said in a statement Wednesday. The company served notices to fire at least 500 of its 1,200 employees, according to the union.
A PetroSA spokesman didn’t immediately respond to an email requesting comment.
