The No. 31 vehicle of the S-520 sounding rocket series, measuring 8 meters in length and 52 centimeters in diameter and carrying the engine, lifted off from the Uchinoura Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture at around 5:30 a.m., according to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

The area comprises 17 ancient sites across the northern main island of Hokkaido and northeastern prefectures of Aomori, Iwate and Akita, representing a rare way of life of prehistoric people in fixed dwellings before the development of agriculture, the World Heritage Committee said. The sites also reflect the complex spiritual culture, including rituals and ceremonies the Jomon people developed. They continued this way of life without changing to an agrarian culture for more than 10,000 years.

Southwest Japan islands added to UNESCO World Heritage list UNESCO decided Monday to add a chain of islands in southwestern Japan with dense subtropical forests to its natural World Heritage list, Japanese government officials said. The World Heritage Committee of the U.N. organization decided during an online session to list as Japan s fifth World Natural Heritage site the 43,000 hectare area, comprising Amami-Oshima Island and Tokunoshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture as well as the northern part of the main Okinawa Island and Iriomote Island in Okinawa Prefecture.
