Brandon Butler’s syndicated outdoor column, Driftwood Outdoors, appears in over 30 newspapers, websites and regional magazines each week. He is the co-host of the Driftwood Outdoors Podcast, with new episodes released every Tuesday. Butler is a past-president of the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers, Missouri Outdoor Communicators and Hoosier Outdoor Writers. He is also an active member of the Professional Outdoor Media Association and the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association. Butler serves as Director of Communications for Roeslein Alternative Energy. Previously, he served as the Executive Director of the Conservation Federation of Missouri, the state’s largest conservation non-profit. They say hindsight is 20-20, a phrase denoting the visual acuity one enjoys when surveying the past. Here we’ll use it to take a look back at the year of the same designation, doubtless the most dreadful and devastating of our lifetimes, and consider the impact it had on the great out-of-doors. For me it all started out harmless enough. January 2020 found me bowhunting Pennsylvania’s late deer season while wielding the new crossbow my wife had gifted me that past Christmas. Perched almost daily in my favorite tree stand, I passed up plenty of smallish bucks. When the extended season came to an end in late January, I still hadn’t fired a shot, launched an arrow, or downed a deer.

Joint winners share inaugural $30K digital billboard art prize

Architecture news & editorial desk Melbourne-based artists Catherine Clover and Daniel Kotsimbos were announced as the winners of the Fivex Art Prize, the first awards program dedicated to digital billboard art in Australia. Sponsored by Australia’s leading premium digital billboard company, QMS Media, the Fivex Art Prize: Billboard Art Reimagined, offers a Grand Prize of $30,000 as well as $1,000 for each of the shortlisted artists. The award has been established for creative individuals of all disciplines to reimagine the dynamic relationship between art and visually mediated street culture. The winners were announced by Melbourne’s Lord Mayor Sally Capp at a launch event for the Prize’s outdoor exhibition displaying the works of all six finalists on two prominent LED QMS Media billboards – a horizontal corner ‘wrap’ and a vertical ‘podium’ – opposite Flinders St Railway Station in the heart of Melbourne CBD.
