As with many great classic cocktails, the debate is spirited as to how the Irish coffee came to be such a phenomenon in San Franciscoâbut locals serious about their history may know the gist of the tale.
Most people believe that a chef by the name of Joe Sheridan made the drink at Foynes (now called Shannon) Airport in Ireland for then-
San Francisco Chronicle travel writer Stanton Delaplane. The scribe loved it so much that we went on and on about it to Jack Koeppler, then-owner of SF s Buena Vista Cafe. R&D to recreate the drink ensued, going so far as to take Koeppler to Ireland to learn about whiskey. There was cream testing too, and obviously a lot of imbibing.

(CNN) Ireland. Close your eyes and picture what you think of when you envision the Emerald Isle. The green. The natural beauty. That distinctive accent. But above all, Ireland is forever associated with its famed hospitality the warmth of its people and its pubs.
It s a country that prides itself on the slogan Céad Míle Fáilte, literally meaning a Hundred Thousand Welcomes. Millions of visitors are welcomed into the country s drinking establishments for a pint every year.
But in a time of a third wave of Covid and a prolonged Iockdown in the country, the pandemic has brought the Irish hospitality sector, and in particular, the pub industry, to its knees. Although each bar faces a different set of circumstances and challenges, one thing is very clear. Ireland s iconic watering holes face a deeply uncertain future.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The 25th-ranked Notre Dame baseball team used the long ball to win the series opener 10-5 over No. 21 Virginia Friday afternoon at Disharoon Park. The Irish (5-2, 5-2 ACC) hit three home runs and tallied 14 hits to take the early lead in the series.
“Some big moments throughout the course of the game,” said head coach Link Jarrett. “Three home runs and the base-running helped ignite our offense which has not been as consistent as we would like. Sheridan pitched really sharp and controlled five innings of relief including seven strikeouts.”
Jared Miller, Niko Kavadas and Brooks Coetzee all went yard for the Irish as the offense carried the way on Friday. Graduate student Joe Sheridan came on in relief of Liam Simon and shut the Cavaliers (7-6, 2-5 ACC) down at the plate. Sheridan tossed five innings of scoreless relief and allowed just one hit.
