Savannah Historic District s Davenport Museum will see upgrades next year

By early next year, Savannahians and tourists alike will be able to enjoy an upgrade and expansion to the Davenport House Museum, one of the Historic District’s most popular landmarks. The Kennedy Pharmacy, one of the few remaining wooden storefronts on East Broughton located behind the Davenport House, is currently undergoing restoration, and a new exhibit is underway as well. Once complete, the Kennedy Pharmacy, a once-shuttered building, will turn into a gift shop for the Davenport Museum showcasing a “blend of historical details with modern amenities” said a Historic Savannah Foundation press release.  The building will also house the tour ticketing area, restrooms, and upstairs offices for Davenport House Museum staff, which will free up space on the first floor of the Davenport building for the new Urban Enslaved exhibit.

Savannah looks to its past for National Historic Preservation Month Savannah looks to its past for National Historic Preservation Month By Blair Caldwell | May 4, 2021 at 6:07 PM EDT - Updated May 4 at 7:03 PM SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - May is National Historic Preservation Month and it’s no secret the past is very present in Savannah. This month is all about celebrating what makes the Hostess City unique. “It’s extraordinary that in Savannah the way we build is by preserving our past and I don’t think there’s any other community that has more dedicated individuals and organizations to preserve not just the aesthetics, and not just the history, but our culture through our storytelling and our placemaking,” said Michael Owens, President and CEO of Tourism Leadership Council.

Savannah craft liquor and beer scene grows with distilleries, breweries

Savannah, a city that is well known for its lively bar scene and open embrace of alcohol, may now be seeing growth in another area the craft distillery market. With the opening of New Realm Distillery, a three-story brick building that features a brewery, distillery, restaurant and tasting room, Savannah’s budding craft liquor and beer industry is hoping this may signal the beginnings of the city’s identity as a prime distillery locale.  New Realm marks Savannah’s second brick-and-mortar distillery. Ghost Coast, the city’s first since prohibition, opened in January 2017. Savannah Bourbon, while it distributes heavily in Savannah and across the state of Georgia, operates out of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The pandemic led to mass layoffs at hotels and restaurants; with economy recovering quickly, business are now shorthanded

On a Wednesday afternoon, Angela Yeo, owner of Le Café Gourmet, tamped down coffee grounds as a worker manned the cash register in the small Parisian-style cafe. Like many businesses lately, the downtown eatery is stretching to accommodate eager customers while being severely short staffed. Yeo and her husband are working with a skeleton crew of four, which isn’t enough to keep them open for their usual seven days a week  and barely gets them through their opening hours. As a result, the cafe has announced they’ll be closed on Thursdays as they work to fill staff positions. Yeo said they need at least three more staffers to work comfortably.
