Today, as the United States and South Korea begin their annual combined military exercises, Iâm reminded of the two years I spent in South Korea as a member of the U.S. Army and my participation in military war games in 2004.
Like most Americans, I was blissfully ignorant of how these joint military exercises â which simulate war on the Korean Peninsula and have involved tens of thousands of troops â damage the psyche of the local people and raise tensions between the United States, South Korea and North Korea.

Mental health effects of COVID lockdown in prison: Interview from inside SCI Albion
By Joe Piette posted on February 26, 2021
This telephone interview with Demitrius Grant, imprisoned at SCI Albion near Erie, Pa., was conducted by Joe Piette for Workers World newspaper on
Feb. 16.
Demetrius Grant: We’re going to be covering the issue of COVID-19 today, as to how it impacts prisoners’ mental health. About a week ago, a sergeant told me a prisoner killed himself, and another one tried to kill himself. He said that was the thirteenth episode in the last month. How many more of these incidents are going on not only in this institution, but in other institutions because they’re not giving prisoners proper mental health care and treatment?

The majority Black workforce in Bessemer is challenging the world’s richest human, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, in their fight to be recognized by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). Bezos is so desperate to bust the union drive, he is illegally offering workers $2,000 to $3,000 “resignation bonuses.”
Speaking in East New York, part of Brooklyn, N.Y., outside an Amazon fulfillment center, Omowale Clay from the D12 Movement said: “A yes vote for the union will be a mighty blow against Amazon. A win in Bessemer will be a shot in the arm to organized labor, which will be heard around the world!”
