Tough on crime approach against prolific offenders in Williams Lake criticized

Over the past couple of years, Williams Lake city council has lobbied for the electronic monitoring of prolific offenders even agreeing to lease 10 GPS electronic tracking anklets in May 2018. City council’s latest efforts have recently involved calls for a public inquiry into the ‘weak and ineffective judicial sentencing of prolific offenders’ which has received the support of the Cariboo Regional District, MLA Lorne Doerkson and MP Todd Doherty. “When you throw these (offenders) in, you think you’re being tough on them and you’ve thrown away the key, but what you’re creating is hardened criminals and that’s been proven over and over again, just not here but internationally.”

Tsilhqot’in members have reported racism while attempting to receive services in Williams Lake, and some reported being denied, with reasoning provided they were from the Tsilhqot’in nation. Cheif Joe Alphonse says it’s not fair to single out First Nations people. “Doing that doesn’t do anything to assist us as a whole in dealing with the pandemic, that’s just flat out racism,” Alphonse says, “The pandemic itself isn’t just going to First Nation communities, it’s everywhere”.

COVID-19 Vaccines No Longer Usable Due To A Power Outage That Affected The Tl etinqox Community

SHARE ON: Photo from Tl etinqox Government face book page A power outage earlier this week spoiled an unknown amount of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines at the First Nations Tl’etinqox community in the Chilcotin. In a memo from First Nations Health Authority that was posted on the Anaham Sage Health Clinic Facebook, it said there was a break in the cold chain for the vaccine that was being held in the community’s fridge. It went on to say that when the chain is broken the vaccine may not work to provide protection and mRNA vaccines such as Moderna are especially sensitive to temperature.
