Vaccine could be available to educators by early February

Superintendents across the commonwealth tuned into a phone call Dec. 15 with Gov. Andy Beshear and officials from the Department of Public Health and the Kentucky Department of Education to hear about how to COVID-19 vaccine will be delivered to school district employees when it becomes available. During that virtual meeting, the governor told superintendents that the Pfizer vaccine may be available to educators in early February, but it “could happen sooner, depending on the availability of the vaccine.” Dr. Connie White, deputy commissioner for the Department of Public Health, who was also present in the webcast meeting, told superintendents the vaccine is safe and has been fully tested, and that she would be comfortable taking it.

The police department teamed up with the Senior Community Center of Owensboro-Daviess County to gather food supplies for those regularly served by the Meals on Wheels program.

Goodfellows Club delivers on annual Christmas celebration

Despite COVID-19 and less than stellar weather, the Goodfellows Club delivered on their annual Christmas party on Saturday. In 1916, Lawrence Hager of the Owensboro Inquirer began serving impoverished Owensboro children at Christmas. More than 100 years later, Hager’s organization, known as the Goodfellows Club, continues to provide for needy children. The 104-year-old organization provides clothing, shoes, coats and emergency dental and medical care — year-round — along with a December Christmas party for children in need. All of the money raised each year goes to help children. While not the 1,000-child spectacle that the beloved Christmas celebration usually boasts, roughly 300 area children between Owensboro Public Schools and Daviess County Public Schools arrived at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Saturday to receive their gifts, said Goodfellows President Bob Clark.

Beshear issues order for returning students to class

Gov. Andy Beshear released his executive order Friday that provides guidance for returning students to in-person classes in January. Local school districts had been holding off any decisions about setting in-person dates until the anticipated order was issued. Students with Owensboro Public Schools will finish the first semester of classes virtually, which means the earliest city students could resume in-person learning is in mid-January. OPS officials made the decision to remain on all-virtual learning though Jan. 13 on Friday. Beshear’s executive order recommended schools stay with virtual learning until at least Jan. 11. Meanwhile, Owensboro Catholic Schools officials are going ahead, for now, with plans to resume in-person classes on Jan. 5, although Chief Administrative Officer Keith Osborne said that could change with COVID-19 case numbers in the county.
