WASHINGTON Primary care doctors and other health professionals will be able to more easily prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder under guidelines released Tuesday by HHS. We are seeing a startling rise in opioid addiction and mental health issues during COVID-19, and addressing these underlying issues is critical to moving forward as a country, Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine, MD, said on a phone call with reporters. We want to incorporate this as a routine part of healthcare, so primary care physicians can more easily take care of a patient who presents in their office with opioid use disorder.

Tracy Hadlow, a resident of West Lothian, Scotland, is creating awareness about drug abuse after losing her 20-year-old son to “street valium.”
Not wanting more people to go through the pain that she endured, Tracy, an NHS clinical support worker, spoke to the BBC and allowed the media company to film her son’s funeral.
She believes that this will push lawmakers to take the required action and make Scotland safe for its citizens.
“For Nathan it was all about fun, he was having the time of his life out there, and it took years to progress to the dangers of drugs. They were so easily accessible, at the school gates, everywhere,” she told the news outlet.

A lot of people have full medicine cabinets that are huge sources of clutter or worse, pose a danger for abuse of prescription medication.
To discourage recreational abuse, the California Highway Patrol and the SLO Opioid Safety Coalition partnered up to host a drug take back program at the CHP office on California St. from 10:00 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Anyone could stop by and drop off their expired, unused or unwanted medication, drugs, and vitamins with no questions asked.

Nationwide, drug overdoses have surged during the pandemic and the Roanoke Valley is experiencing the same trend.
It’s a crisis within a crisis, affecting more of our neighbors than ever before.
“It could be in a bathroom in a restaurant downtown, it could be at an intersection in South Roanoke, it could be at a house in Northwest, it could be in a parking lot in old Southwest,” Roanoke Fire-EMS Chief David Hoback said.
