Romilda Pereira says people had asked her to run for the city council, but that what convinced her to begin organizing was watching politicians and clergy descend on Olney Street, where 73-year-old Delois Brown was murdered Saturday as she sat on her front porch.
Pereira, 39, who grew up in the Bowdoin/Geneva area and who does non-profit work helping newly released prisoners re-adapt to life on the outside, said today she knew they would soon be leaving and not returning, and the cycle of violence would soon start up again. And so she s now organizing a run for the District 3 City Council seat (Dorchester) held by Frank Baker, who has yet to say if he s running for re-election.
Grandmother killed in shooting while sitting on her front porch
DORCHESTER, MA (WBZ) A grandmother in her mid-70s was shot and killed in Dorchester on Saturday while sitting on her front porch, according to the Boston Police Department.
The shooting took place on Olney Street a little before 6 p.m. Boston Police Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long said the victim was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.
Long said the woman was an innocent bystander caught in the line of the gunfire.
“It is outrageous and heartbreaking that a woman in her 70’s can’t sit in her porch on a warm evening without this being the end result,” he said.
There were other people near her when she was shot, according to Long.
Police haven’t yet made any arrests. Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins said those responsible for Saturday evening s shooting will be held accountable.
“We are going to be prosecuting people that have guns, said Rollins. You will be sent away, and there will be no recourse for you.” A grandmother in her 70s was shot and killed while sitting outside on her porch in Dorchester Saturday evening, according to Boston police.
