A Bradbury-ian nightmare
We’ve had the Age of Enlightenment, the Age of Exploration, the Age of Progress and the Age of Faith. We might call our world today the Age of Irony.
The United States went to war with Japan over China. Japan refused to remove its troops, embargoes were put in place, and Japan attacked the United States. China has now turned against us and, we are their mortal enemy.
When Adolf Hitler and the Germans invaded Russia in 1941 and the panzers were flattening everything in sight, the United States sent vital supplies via the Arctic convoys to Archangel and Murmansk at considerable cost in ships and lives of American merchant seamen. Russia has now turned against us, and we are their mortal enemy.
Timber tax cuts cost Oregon towns billions. Then clear-cuts polluted their water and drove up the price.

On a damp night in November 2019, dozens of residents packed into the local firehouse in Corbett, Oregon, a town about 30 miles outside of Portland. Water manager Jeff Busto told the crowd that logging had devastated a creek that provided part of the town’s drinking water supply.
A timber company had clear-cut thousands of trees along the creek, leaving only a thin strip standing between the town’s drinking water and recently flattened land strewned with debris. On Friday, March 13, Billâs Food Center had to limit the amount of toilet paper patrons could purchase. Owner Bill Faust Jr. said if people keep âpanic purchasing,â the shortages will continue to get worse.
