Warming oceans have forced tens of thousands of marine species to abandon their tropical homes along the equator and relocate to cooler waters, a new study reveals.
Researchers, led by the University of Auckland, found a mass exodus of nearly 50,000 species including fish, mollusks, birds and corals that have moved poleward since 1955.
In other words, scientists say, species that can move are moving to escape warming surface temperatures that currently average 68F (20C).
The findings show that rising temperatures are making tropical regions unbearable for native species, but these creatures are relocating to subtropical waters that are also warming.

Coronavirus cases declined in Oregon for the second week in a row, reaching levels not seen since October.
Oregon’s decline in confirmed and presumed infections came amid a 9% drop in weekly testing. But while less testing may miss some infections, it doesn’t appear to be obscuring any hidden problems. In fact, the share of tests with positive results fell by nearly a full point week over week, reaching 3.4% the lowest level since October.
ZIP codes outside the Portland area again saw the most coronavirus cases last week. Cases are comparatively high in the college cities of Corvallis and Eugene, but also in Roseburg, Grants Pass, Medford, Salem and Redmond.
