Oregon s Day of Empathy Centers Women, Dignity, and Criminal Justice Reform The national event aims to shine a light on individuals impacted by the criminal legal system. By Gabriel Granillo 3/1/2021 at 3:30pm The Day of Empathy in Oregon event, March 2, aims to question the effectiveness of punishment, emphasize the rights of incarcerated individuals, and rethink our criminal justice system.  2020 was the year of police reform. The protests that erupted in the wake of George Floyd’s murder sparked a nation-wide push to rethink law enforcement and community policing. But  2021 could be the year of criminal justice reform. At least, that’s the hope of the organizers of the National Day of Empathy in Oregon. Jessica Katz, founding director of the Family Preservation Project, says March 2 will be the first time Oregon has participated in the national Day of Empathy event which gathers individuals directly impacted by the US criminal justice system with lawmaker

Oregon Department of Corrections announces new superintendent for TRCI

UMATILLA — The Oregon Department of Corrections has announced the hiring of a new superintendent at Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla, according to a press release. Erin Reyes, a former law enforcement, state government and public safety official with more than 25 years of experience, was announced as the new superintendent on Feb. 22. “I never would have imagined my life and career path would lead me to where I am today,” Reyes said. Reyes steps into the role after Tyler Blewett resigned in December 2020 after holding the position for a year. Soon after, the prison was rocked by one of the largest COVID-19 outbreaks seen in Oregon prisons since the pandemic began.

SRCI lockdown remains in place; no new cases among staff since Feb 5

ONTARIO The Tier 4 status keeping Snake River Correctional Institution in a total lockdown — in which visitation and some services are canceled — has been extended by the Oregon Department of Corrections once again. The latest extension is expected to last through Thursday, according to an email from Amber Campbell on Friday afternoon. Campbell did not provide information on whether an employee or staff had most recently tested positive this time around. However, according to a tracker online, the most recent cases was an inmate on Feb. 15. No employee cases have been reported since. Feb. 5, and vaccinations have been being distributed to staff and inmates. Only five cases have been reported in February.
