For transgender people, having a driver’s license or identification with “the wrong gender marker on it can force a transgender person to out themselves on a daily basis, putting them at risk for ridicule, discrimination and violence,” the group Transgender Education Advocates of Utah said in a statement.
The decision came after two people, Angie Rice and Sean Childers-Gray, were denied sex-designation changes by a Utah judge who said it was unclear whether he had the authority to approve it.
They came before the high court in 2018, pointing out that many other judges in the state had routinely granted them. The state did not fight their lawsuit.

For the first time, LGBTQ Americans will be protected under the Fair Housing Act (FHA), the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced Thursday. In a memorandum, the agency declared that it will begin enforcing the FHA to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, a new move that will extend civil rights protections to millions of LGBTQ Americans.
Passed in 1968, the Fair Housing Act traditionally protected against discrimination on the basis of “race, color, religion, sex, familial status, or national origin.” Sexual orientation and gender identity were not explicitly included.

A federal judge in California has blocked a recent Trump administration rule that immigration and LGBTQ advocates have dubbed the “Death to Asylum” rule that would have effectively made it impossible for LGBTQ individuals and people living with HIV to seek asylum.
The rule, introduced last month, would rewrite asylum law without authorization from Congress and redefined who qualifies as a “refugee” by requiring people seeking asylum to meet more stringent criteria before they can claim “credible and reasonable fear” of persecution or death if they return to their countries of origin.
