No march, new problems in fight for women’s equality

A year ago this month, the female-forward energy was crackling.
The Equal Rights Amendment was in play again nearly 100 years after it was written. Virginia had just become the 38th state to ratify the amendment, and there was a possibility that it would finally be added to the Constitution.
The field of presidential candidates was more female than ever before. And the frigid streets of Washington filled once again with pink pussy hats and optimism perhaps too much optimism for what was becoming an iconic, annual tradition: the Women s March.

This week, Connecticut takes a massive step forward in its vaccine allocation plan: All individuals over the age of 75 are now eligible for a vaccination. While residents over the age of 65, frontline workers and folks with certain health conditions will also be included in Phase 1B, seniors are taking a priority in our state’s effort to save lives.
My colleagues and I in Hartford, along with Gov. Lamont’s entire administration, owe it to our constituents to provide the most efficient, user friendly vaccine distribution possible. At the same time, we know that this process will not go smoothly without the cooperation and understanding of Connecticut residents.

Run by the heirs of Walmart founder Sam Walton, the foundation donates $25 million a year to nonprofits concerned about the Colorado River. It’s clear the foundation cares deeply about the River in this time of excruciating drought, and some of its money goes to river restoration or more efficient irrigation.
Yet its main interest is promoting “demand management,” the water marketing scheme that seeks to add 500,000 acre-feet of water to declining Lake Powell by paying rural farmers to temporarily stop irrigating.

Covid-19 cases are surging across the country again. The number of critical care patients have doubled and the positivity rate amongst the daily tested is on the rise. Yet, we hear the deaths are “just 10,000 or so” in total. Is this far too much or far too less given Pakistan’s size, demographic and socioeconomic dynamic all of which are clear exacerbators of coronavirus transmission? Here’s a breakdown on why the numbers are, in fact, lower than reported. In a region with relatively low levels of public health spending, the question about the reliability of data remains. Many deaths are not reported within the vital registration system.
