Avalanche experts are warning people headed to Colorado s backcountry to be careful and pay attention to avalanche forecasts following the deaths of three people in two slides since Friday. CBS Denver reports that 380 avalanches have been reported around the state in the last week.
The San Juan County Office of Emergency Management said on Sunday, a rescue team recovered the bodies of two men caught in an avalanche on Saturday while skiing near Ophir Pass outside Silverton Albert Perry, 55, and Dr. Jeff Paffendorf, 51, of Durango. They were reported missing after heading out for a ski trip known locally as the Battleship, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
While the backcountry has a dangerous snowpack that inexperienced skiers best approach with extreme caution, in-bounds terrain at the four area mountains of Aspen Snowmass is controlled and safe â when users uphold their end of the safety bargain.
âIt is very important for the public to understand that when we have runs closed, there is a good reason,â Aspen Skiing Co. vice president of communications Jeff Hanle said Monday.Â

Over the weekend in the central mountains of Colorado, three backcountry skiers lost their lives in two separate accidents. On Friday, Jeff Schneider, a veteran ski patroller who had worked on snow safety at Aspen Highlands during the 1970s, was buried in a slide in the Anthracite Range, accessed off Kebler Pass in Gunnison County, while solo skiing.
On Friday, Jeffrey Schnoid Schneider was found buried in an avalanche in the Anthracite Range, Crested Butte News reported. His was the first avalanche death of the 2020 snow season.
