Giri wins three in a row
Anish Giri has so far played in all the events of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. Now, at the Magnus Carlsen Invitational, he left a strong impression on day 1 of the preliminaries, as he beat Alan Pichot, Carlsen and Wesley So in rounds 3-5 to go into the second day of action as the sole leader on 4/5 points.
Carlsen and Levon Aronian also scored three wins on Saturday, although they also lost one of their five games to finish the day on 3½/5 they are currently sharing second place half a point behind the leader.

And with the country losing the three-time Philippine and currently ranked no. 9 in global, he now revealed his reason why.
According to So, it’s because of how politics influenced Philippine sports, which led to his frustrations. We can recall that the former Caviteño moved to the US in 2012 because of how chess seemed irrelevant to the Philippines.
Wesley So Officially Becomes U.S. Citizen
Reigning U.S. chess champion GM Wesley So is now officially a U.S. citizen. The Filipino-born 27-year-old super-grandmaster got his American citizenship on February 26, 2021, at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services offices in St. Paul/Minneapolis, reports US Chess.
Interviewed by Debbie Cannon of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, So called America the land of opportunity as he explained why he wanted to be come a citizen:
I want to give back to a country that has been so good to me. From the moment I landed here I was encouraged and enabled to become better than I was. I like this attitude and the tremendous generosity of American culture. Most people here have no idea what it is like anywhere else in the world, and they don t appreciate the amazing spirit of this country. I have competed in most countries of the world and I can say . I love it here!
