OnePlus 8T Concept device features color changing film and mmWave radar
OnePlus has unveiled a new concept device, the simply named OnePlus 8T Concept. Based on the existing OnePlus 8T, this new concept device lets the company showcase some of the technologies that they have been working on.
The OnePlus 8T Concept features a color-changing film under the back glass. The film contains metal oxide and can change its colors based on different applied voltages by changing the valence state of the metal ions. The film can change its color from silver to a dark blue and back.
The back glass is etched in a way to mimic the shape of the Pamukkale hot spring terraces in Turkey.

OnePlus is readying another concept smartphone as we head into 2021. This will follow the OnePlus Concept One from earlier this year which used the electrochromic glass technology, which is an evolution of a color-shifting glass that gave the phone the ability to hide its camera. At CES 2020, OnePlus took time to show off a new device under a “Concept” category that wasn’t meant to be sold, but instead was a way for the smartphone maker to show off ideas it had been working on. The phone, dubbed OnePlus Concept One, had a slick tinting glass trick that we have yet to see in a phone you can buy, though that wasn’t necessarily the point of the phone.

At CES 2020, OnePlus announced a concept phone based on the OnePlus 7T Pro. The phone, which is officially known as the OnePlus Concept One, was made in collaboration with McLaren. The highlight of the phone is its “invisible” rear cameras which become visible when an electric current is passed through the piece of electrochromic glass covering the sensors. It is a pretty neat trick that gives the phone a very unique look. Now OnePlus is back with another concept smartphone called the OnePlus 8T Concept and it too has a really cool design trick too.
OnePlus 8T Concept: Some interesting use cases
With the Concept One, the actions you could do with the electrochromic glass were pretty binary: on or off. With the ECMF feature of the 8T Concept, though, there’s a whole range of potential use cases.
The ECMF film uses mmWave technology to create low-latency interactions with the phone itself. In the video above, you see how this could allow the entire panel to change when you get a phone call or other notification. In another use case example, OnePlus shows how you could perform breathing exercises with the rear-facing camera of the OnePlus 8T Concept focused on you, and the back panel would swell and dissipate to match your rhythm. This would, in theory, allow the phone to be a kind of health monitor.
