The department at the same time paid other officers overtime to fill shifts that could have been filled by officers who were paid to stay home, the audit found. How much overtime was spent this way couldn’t be determined because the city’s record-keeping is so “antiquated,” the audit found.

Onondaga County has seen a sudden spike in syphilis cases and is urging people to get tested if they are at risk of getting the sexually transmitted disease. There were 28 cases of syphilis in the first three months of the 2021. That equals the total number of cases the county saw for all of 2020. “While our focus is on addressing the Covid-19 pandemic, we cannot forget other public health concerns in our community such as this recent rise in syphilis cases,” Dr. Indu Gupta, the county’s health commissioner, said in a news release.
