Every president leaves a legacy. For Donald Trump it is, among many things, a Republican Party in worse shape than he found it.
He won 74 million votes in November more than any Republican presidential candidate in history. Joe Biden, however, received 81 million votes and a clear-cut victory in the electoral college, which is why the Democrat sits in the White House and Trump does not. That’s how our system of representative democracy works.
But Trump didn’t just lose the White House. Under his divisive, ego-driven leadership, Republicans also surrendered control of the House and Senate, a losing trifecta unmatched since 1932 and President Herbert Hoover’s dismal showing amid the Great Depression.
Thousands of young progressives say they want to run for office
Thousands of progressive young people have expressed interest in running for office since the start of the year, demonstrating ongoing energy on the left after last year’s elections.
Run For Something, the PAC that supports young progressives running for state and local office, says 6,554 people signed up for its pipeline in January, many of whom indicated their interest to run in the wake of the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6.
The high interest comes on the heels of Democrats winning the White House and Senate, and maintaining their majority in the House.

State legislators have filed hundreds of election administration-related bills.

The contentious aftermath of the 2020 election is now fading into the rearview mirror. But battles over voting policy and the facts versus fiction about elections will continue to play out in state legislative hearings, town meetings, state and county parties, Facebook comment sections, and even living rooms throughout 2021.
