An event staffer at an international boat racing competition anxiously examined the long, cylindrical floats lining the roughly 2,000-meter course at the Sea Forest Waterway in the capital’s Koto Ward.
“I hope none of them are attached to the devices,” the staff member said, worriedly gazing into the water as if a monster was lurking below the surface.
The staffer was working at a May event for selecting athletes to compete in the upcoming Games, held at the same location where the rowing and canoeing events are scheduled for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Bars and restaurants outside of Tokyo have stopped serving alcohol to prevent imbibers in the capital from fleeing their state of emergency, crossing borders to grab some drinks, and potentially spreading the novel coronavirus.
But not all businesses have followed suit. And many are receiving free advertising about the availability of alcohol in those establishments.
Under the COVID-19 state of emergency in Tokyo, drinking places have halted sales of booze to cut down on foot traffic, particularly in entertainment districts, and halt the latest surge in novel coronavirus infections.

Workers at tourist spots have voiced disappointment after the government decided to expand pre-emergency anti-virus measures to include Tokyo and two other prefectures.
On Monday, Tokyo, Kyoto and Okinawa will join the prefectures of Osaka, Hyogo and Miyagi, where the tough measures similar to those taken under a state of emergency have already been implemented.

My wife and I began fantasizing about our dream home the day we moved into our first Tokyo apartment.
That place was meant to be a temporary solution until we found “something better” but, five years later, we still hadn’t found anything because we hadn’t really been looking. One day, our 6-year-old daughter, Hana, started crying, without any obvious trigger: “I want to go back to grandma’s and grandpa’s NICE place,” she whined. That particular place would be in Germany. Apparently, it was time to speed up our moving plans.
Everybody around us was buying houses, but owning wasn’t for us. With that kind of total freedom comes sole responsibility. We didn’t want to pick up all the pieces all on our own come next typhoon season.
