Customer Sam Hammes (left) and cashier Peter Mbonabucha, both of Cedar Rapids, share a hug after Hammes presented a mock-up check for $3.000 to Mbonabucha on Jan. 27 at the Oakland Road Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids. When Hammes came up $12 short for a grocery bill, Mbonabucha paid the difference. To repay that kindness, Hammes set up a GoFundMe campaign that has raised more than $5,000 so far. Peter Mbonabucha knows how it feels to come up short at the cash register and have someone step in to make up the difference. It’s happened to him.
So when Sam Hammes, 33, of Cedar Rapids, came up $12 short on a day that he’d left his wallet at home and a work friend had already loaned him $100 to get groceries, Mbonabucha chipped in that $12.
Jailed in January 2021 at Bristol Crown Court
