State Board Of Education Rescinds Charter School Funding Decision

State Board Of Education Rescinds Charter School Funding Decision The Oklahoma State Board of Education voted unanimously on Monday to rescind its controversial plan of providing more state funding to Oklahoma charter schools. The narrow vote on March 25 directed a share of local tax dollars to charter schools. The decision was meant to resolve a 2017 lawsuit filed by the Oklahoma Public Charter School Association. It was also met with criticism, including from state Superintendent Joy Hofmeister. She questioned the constitutionality of the decision. The resolution received backlash from school districts across the state which decided to take legal action. The vote to rescind the March resolution was dependent upon dismissal of the 2017 lawsuit, a release of claims against the state Board of Education, a release of claims against the state Department of Education and the passing of Senate Bill 229.

Kyle Phillips / The Transcript OKLAHOMA CITY — Some state senators are questioning whether a highly-touted piece of legislation that seeks to equalize public school funding is the best way to bridge the divide between property-poor rural and property-rich urban and suburban communities. There are fears that the late-session push to get Senate Bill 229 across the finish line is merely a “knee jerk reaction” to a controversial — and unpopular — settlement entered into by the State Board of Education that has resulted in nearly 200 lawsuits filed by school districts. That settlement, with the Oklahoma Public Charter School Association, would give charter schools access to new local and state revenue streams.

Nearly 200 Oklahoma districts sue board over charter school settlement

Oklahoman More than 180 Oklahoma school districts have joined a lawsuit fighting a surprise settlement that opened local tax dollars to charter schools. The Oklahoma State Board of Education shocked the state s education sphere on March 25 when it unexpectedly settled a 2017 lawsuit with the Oklahoma Public Charter School Association. The board agreed to allow charter schools and virtual charter schools to tap into local tax revenue, which was previously reserved for traditional school districts. Fearing the settlement could divert millions of dollars from traditional public schools, 187 districts  representing urban, suburban and rural areas of the state  asked the Oklahoma State Supreme Court on Friday to nullify the state board s decision.
