Perry Police Investigating Accidental Shooting Of 13-Year-Old

By: Barry Mangold A 13-year-old is expected to survive after an accidental shooting Friday, according to Perry police.  “When we arrived, we found a 10-year-old and a 13-year-old at the residence. The 13-year-old had suffered a gunshot wound,” Lt. Andrew Dudrey said.  The child was struck in the “lower face and neck area” by a shotgun blast. The police report will be complete in the coming days, Dudrey said. District Attorney Brian Hermanson will decide whether to file criminal charges.  Although the shooting itself was an accident, Dudrey said criminal charges are possible.  “It definitely was an unfortunate incident; however, I think there are some contributing factors that very well could…result in criminal charges. But as far as the way the incident itself took place, it was, indeed, purely an accident,” Dudrey said.

The statistics are overwhelming. Of the approximate 3.6 million referrals made to child protection agencies nationally, nearly 700,000 are found to be actual victims of child abuse. To put that in perspective, said Ali Kern with Tinker’s Family Advocacy Program, the number of child abuse victims in the United States annually would fill the University of Oklahoma’s 86,112-seat football stadium roughly eight-and-a-half times. “So if you’ve ever been to an OU game and it’s jam packed and you think ‘wow, that’s a lot of people,’ imagine those being victims and kids of abuse,” she said. “That is just crazy to me. We don’t talk about it because it’s an uncomfortable conversation to have, but we have got to talk about it.”
