New Oklahoma Workers Comp Fraud Law Goes in Effect Nov 1

New Oklahoma Workers’ Comp Fraud Law Goes in Effect Nov. 1 May 14, 2021 Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt on May 7 signed into law legislation creating new penalties for workers’ compensation fraud. The legislative summary for House Bill 2236 states that anyone “failing to report to an employer, insurance carrier, or third-party administrator any earned income while receiving temporary total disability benefits,” could be subject to felony charges. The measure also revises qualifications for employment in the state’s Workers’ Compensation Fraud Investigation Unit. Free Market Friday: The importance of family

Free Market Friday: The importance of family By: Jonathan Small Guest Columnist May 6, 2021 Jonathan Small The Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs was honored to have sports journalist Jason Whitlock as keynote speaker at our annual Citizenship Award Dinner. Whitlock is known for his refreshing takes on sports and social issues and didn’t disappoint. Among other things, Whitlock, who is Black, noted that he was more likely to be shot by someone in his local neighborhood than by the police, and that pop cultural influences have played a bigger role in fostering negative outcomes for many youths than systemic racism.

John Cornyn Urged to Abandon Action-Civics Bill

(Demetrius Freeman/Reuters) Leading members of the Civics Alliance, convened by the National Association of Scholars (NAS) to fight action civics and related dangers, have issued an open letter appealing to Senator John Cornyn (R., Texas) and Congressman Tom Cole (R., Okla.) to abandon their support for the egregiously misnamed “Civics Secures Democracy Act.” This $6 billion bill (which should be named the Action Civics and Critical Race Theory Harm America Act) will impose these pernicious pedagogies on every school in the nation, just as Obama used massive federal grants to spread Common Core. Cornyn and Cole are Republican co-sponsors of this “bipartisan” bill, and their exit from that sponsorship could kill this legislative monstrosity before it manages to destroy American education.

Oklahoma lawmakers spar over bill to nullify President Biden s orders

Oklahoman Republican leaders of the Oklahoma House and Senate are divided on a bill that would allow a majority of state lawmakers to nullify President Joe Biden s executive orders.  Saying the original bill language was unconstitutional, Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat, R-Oklahoma City, introduced a floor substitute to the legislation from House Speaker Charles McCall, R-Atoka, that enjoyed widespread support among House Republicans.  Over the weekend, Treat came under fire from Republican activists for not supporting House Bill 1236. It s unclear if the Senate leader s proposed substitute will placate his critics who plan to rally at the state Capitol on Tuesday.
