Letters April 30: Where Macdonald belongs; involuntary care; lab assistants pay

Placing the statue in the museum along with an accurate, as possible, description of Macdonald, his government and policies will provide a learning opportunity for all of us. It is not only time to take the statue out of storage; it is time we learn the positive and negative policies of his actions and as the adage says, “learn from our past”. By placing the statue in a public place such as Bastion Square, we are venerating the man and everything he stood for, forgetting that not everyone benefited from his actions and that such statues can be hurtful reminders of a past that favoured certain privileged groups over others.

Ted Harrison paintings draw strong prices at Lunds auction of Charman items

Born in England, Harrison moved to Canada where he became renowned for colourful paintings portraying the Yukon. He died in Victoria in 2015. Lunds had estimated that the Magnificent Yukon acrylic-on-canvas painting, 48 inches by 64 inches, would sell for between $25,000 and $35,000. Another Harrison painting, Paddlewheeler, sold for $55,000 well above the estimate of $10,000 to $15,000 for the 36-inch by 24-inch artwork. The strong prices “really shows that Eric had a bit of an eye. He was a keen collector of good things,” said Lunds president Peter Boyle on Wednesday. Boyle was “pleasantly surprised” by the sale prices for the Harrison works. Each went to a different buyer. Some will stay in Greater Victoria, while others are leaving the Island.

Victoria s Intersecting Municipalities - Spacing Vancouver

Foul Bay Road, the supposed border between Oak Bay and Victoria. Image courtesy of Casey van Wensem. Last Wednesday my recycling didn’t get picked up. Wednesday is usually recycling day, but this time the truck didn’t show up. This happens fairly often. It’s a byproduct of living on the border between two Capital Regional District (CRD) municipalities: Oak Bay and Victoria. The line that divides the two municipalities runs right through the middle of my top-floor apartment, roughly dividing the guest bedroom from the rest of the suite. This means that responsibility for simple tasks like waste collection, as well as bigger issues like property taxes and bylaws, is shared and often convoluted. Victoria handles the recycling pickup, which means that sometimes mine gets picked up and sometimes it doesn’t.

Suspected impaired driver runs away from Oak Bay officers and into the ocean

But the driver continued down the road and parked at Willows Beach, where police advised him that he was under arrest for impaired driving. After yelling that he had nothing to live for and asking to be shot, the man went into the water and swam about 50 metres offshore. He came back after speaking with officers for about 25 minutes and was taken into custody. The man was given a driving prohibition, ticketed for driving without consideration and taken to hospital for an evaluation. Times Colonist
