The Region 3 Louisiana Water Initiative Regional Steering Committee took the first steps in determining who will administer in flood control efforts in northeast Louisiana.
In response to the floods in 2018, Gov. John Bel Edwards launched the Louisiana Watershed Initiative, which takes on a strategic and scientific approach to managing the watersheds and floodplains in the state and helps to target frequently flooded areas.
The Region 3 Louisiana Watershed Initiative hosted a community meeting Tuesday to discuss the provision governance recommendation approved by the Regional Steering Committee.
The governance recommendation for Region 3 offered the forming of a long-term Watershed Coalition comprised of private and public representatives.

The Monroe Chamber of Commerce honored the businesses making significant contributions to the Ouachita Parish economy through capital improvements, expansion, job creation and community involvement.
Forty-two nominees for the the prestigious Thomas H. Scott Awards of Excellence collectively created or retained 1,274 jobs in Ouachita Parish and made over $180 million in capital investments in 2020 and 2021.
The reception was held Thursday at The Hub in downtown Monroe.
One business was presented the Thomas H. Scott Award, which is not handed out each year and is reserved for special projects. In addition to the annual awards for the small, medium, large and corporate levels three businesses received special judge s awards.
Louisiana Sheriff s Association recognizes OPSO s Tolbird as Deputy of the Year

The Louisiana Sheriff s Association has recognized Captain Chris Tolbird of the Ouachita Parish Sheriff s Office as Deputy of the Year for 2021.
Every year the Louisiana Sheriff s Association honors a deputy who demonstrates an outstanding work ethic in the performance of his or her duty and strives to improve the quality of life in their community.
Tolbird has been recognized for his 22 years of outstanding service at the Ouachita Parish Sheriff s Office, according to a news release.
Prior to his career at the OPSO, Tolbird served for six years in the U.S. Army. Upon joining the Ouachita Parish Sheriff s Office, he started his career at the Ouachita Correctional Center. He later transferred to the Patrol Division and has served as a field training officer, a patrol sergeant and is currently a patrol shift captain.

The University of Louisiana Monroe will have four commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 15, 2021, to recognize the graduating class of Spring 2021.
The four colleges, Arts, Education, and Sciences, Business and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and Pharmacy, will have separate ceremonies in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. State COVID-19 requirements limit the number of people allowed in public buildings.
Each graduate is allowed to have 10 guests. Guests must wear facemasks inside the coliseum and are asked to maintain social distancing from other parties. Graduates are required to wear a solid color or ULM-branded mask.
