Shreveport VA reaches 5,000 COVID-19 vaccine milestone

When Vietnam Veteran William O. Smith, Jr. arrived at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, for a regular medical appointment Feb. 3, he did not expect anything out of the ordinary.
To his surprise, the staff greeted Smith with balloons, flashing cameras (pictured above), media interviews, a gift basket and a special certificate presented by the medical center director.
Why the fanfare? Because Smith was the 5,000th person to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at the facility.

A few weeks ago, a Veteran in an intensive care unit in Gainesville, Florida, used an iPad to see his son, who was serving abroad, to tell him he loved him. The Veteran passed away the next day.
“The video call is what linked these two in a meaningful interaction that could not have happened otherwise,” said Justin Maynard, staff chaplain at the Malcom Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran.

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) â Overton Brooks VA Medical Center celebrated Wednesday, Feb. 3 after giving its 5,000th COVID-19 vaccination.
Recognized as the 5,000th among staffers and veterans at the Shreveport hospital was local veteran William O. Junior. He later told KSLA News 12 that the honor was news to him too â good news.

Zaokoye Oshun Chatman, 27, of Shreveport, faces one count each of attempted second-degree murder and second-degree aggravated battery. The New Orleans Police Department has also obtained a warrant for Chatman’s arrest on the charge of second-degree murder in connection with a homicide that occurred there on Jan. 31 in the 5100 block of St. Claude Avenue.
