LOWELL, Mass. â More than 1,000 educators, entrepreneurs and other experts will participate in the 10th annual Deshpande Symposium on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Higher Education Thursday, June 10 through Friday, June 11.
The virtual symposium is presented by its founders UMass Lowell and the Deshpande Foundation along with the Burton D. Morgan Foundation. The event â which is typically held in person each June â will be conducted virtually for the second time in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.Â

California educators are considering a new mathematics instruction framework that purposefully de-emphasizes calculus, though calculus is required or heavily encouraged for applicants to several of the nation’s top colleges and universities.
The framework, which is still under consideration, proposes eliminating advanced math classes in middle school and eliminating a “push to calculus in grade twelve,” which it calls “misguided.”
The framework prioritizes equity and instructs teachers to “teach toward social justice.” It argues against beginning advanced math classes in middle school, saying, “Many students, parents, and teachers encourage acceleration in grade eight (or sooner in some cases) because of an incorrect conclusion that Calculus is an important high-school goal.”

Americans rightfully celebrate Paul Revere’s patriotic service during the American Revolution, especially his famous midnight ride “on the 18th of April in ’75.
Less well known is his lifetime of groundbreaking metallurgical work. At the Weston Historical Society spring lecture on Thursday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m., Robert Martello will show how Revere’s greatest contribution to building the new nation took place in workshops and manufactories.

Revere’s artisan training as a silversmith led him into new fields of iron casting and bronze bell and cannon making. He later became the first American to roll copper into sheets used to protect vessels belonging to the U.S. Navy.

Did you know that First Parish in Weston has a Paul Revere bell? Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow assured Revere’s place in American history with his famous poem “Paul Revere’s Ride.”
Less well known is Revere’s groundbreaking metal work, including manufacture of almost 400 bells. At least 134 remain, including the bell in the First Parish Church tower.
At 7:30 p.m. April 29, the Weston Historical Society will present an illustrated Zoom lecture “Paul Revere: From Midnight Rider to Industrial Revolutionary.” Robert Martello will show how Revere’s greatest contribution to building the new nation actually took place in workshops and manufactories.
